We have a joint interview process with Neurology, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Diagnostic Radiology, and Interventional Radiology at Brown University Health. The faculty interviews and interview day with the advanced program count as the interview day with Brown’s Preliminary Internal Medicine Program. We do not offer separate preliminary track interviews days.
Under some special circumstances, we will accommodate consideration for the general preliminary track outside of interviews with the advanced program. Please reach out to imrp_rih@brown.edu regarding any special situation and for more information.
Preliminary IM – Neurology (NRMP # 1677140P1)
Seven positions in the Preliminary Internal Medicine program are reserved for applicants who match in the Brown Neurology program. This capacity allows all members of the entering Neurology class to spend their Preliminary IM year at Brown. Most years, the entire Neurology class takes advantage of this guarantee, enabling them to enter Neurology residency already familiar with the institution. In addition, Preliminary-Neurology interns rotate on neurology services, meet with Neurology faculty during their first year, and get to know their future colleagues.
Applicants who wish to be considered for the Preliminary-Neurology Internal Medicine program must apply specifically to the Preliminary IM – Neurology (NRMP # 1677140P1) and list this program on their supplementary NRMP rank list in association with the Brown Neurology Residency.
Applicants who also wish to be considered for the general Preliminary IM Program (NRMP # 1677140P0), for use in their supplementary NRMP rank list in association with other Neurology programs, will need to formally apply to this program.
Preliminary IM – Anesthesiology (NRMP # 1677140P2)
Two positions in the Preliminary Internal Medicine program have been reserved for applicants who match in the Brown Anesthesiology program, accommodating up to 2 members of the entering Anesthesiology class to spend their Preliminary IM year at Brown. Spending the PGY-1 year in Internal Medicine at Brown, prior to continuing into an advanced Anesthesiology Residency, permits Preliminary-Anesthesiology interns to meet with Anesthesia faculty during their first year and get to know their future colleagues. Preliminary IM Interns will also spend a month on an Anesthesiology, thus reinforcing their knowledge and skills in the discipline which they will be entering and familiarizing themselves with the clinical operations of the Department and the OR.

Applicants who also wish to be considered for the general Preliminary IM Program (NRMP # 1677140P0), for use in their supplementary NRMP rank list in association with other Anesthesiology programs, will need to formally apply to this program.

The preliminary program can be listed on the supplementary NRMP rank list in association with the Brown advanced program and advanced programs elsewhere.
