From Our Program Director

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Brown!  We hope that this website will describe some of the core characteristics which define learning and practicing Internal Medicine here at Brown.

Dear Applicants,

Thank you for your interest in the Brown University Internal Medicine Residency Program! Residency training is a formative experience and lays the foundation for your future success.

At Brown, we have broad clinical training with three complementary inpatient sites, outpatient clinics that are patient-centered medical homes, and graded autonomy to foster your growth. Our residents and faculty are dedicated to our patients, each other, and our community. This comes through in our collegial and nurturing environment which is a defining feature of our program.

We are excited to transition to an X+Y residency structure in July 2026. We have been laying the groundwork over the last year and look forward to sharing many more details during our interview days. Residents in our categorical track will alternate between 6 weeks of dedicated inpatient or elective time and 2 weeks spent exclusively in the outpatient setting. Residents in our GIM track will have a 6+2 schedule as an intern and then transition to a 4+4 schedule as a second and third year resident.

We offer multiple ways for you to develop and pursue your professional interests. Brown has multiple tracks available including women’s health, research, clinician educator, art and medicine, and international health. All residents pursue research and scholarly work and many publish and present their findings at national conferences through support from the Department of Medicine. In their second and third years, our residents have a second longitudinal outpatient experience with a subspecialist or a primary care doctor, either academic or community-based. This second site clinic experience not only helps residents decide on their future work but also allows for clinical and career mentorship by one, dedicated faculty member in that area. Many opportunities exist at Brown to advance health equity including the Brown Advocates for Social Change and Equity (BASCE) fellowship which is open to all residents and fellows.

I invite you to get to know Providence. It is a vibrant, welcoming, and diverse city with great natural beauty, arts, delicious food, and an abundance of ice cream places. My family and I moved to Rhode Island in 2022 and are enjoying ourselves immensely.

I wish you all the best on your journey in medicine.

Sincerely,

Rachel Simmons, MD
