APPLICATION DEADLINE: November 1, 2026
Please note the following conventions for application to Brown IM:
- Applications are accepted exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).
- In addition to the Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE), a minimum of three letters of recommendation are required.
- For applicants who apply to the Categorical Internal Medicine program and/or General Internal Medicine program, one of the three required letters must be an Internal Medicine Structured Evaluative Letter (IM-SEL) or a Departmental letter such as Internal Medicine Department Chair, Vice Chair for Education, or Clerkship Director letter.
- For applicants who apply to the Preliminary program, an Internal Medicine Structured Evaluative Letter (IM-SEL) or a Departmental letter is not required.
- Step Exams: USMLE Step 1 result is required at time of application; USMLE Step 2 score must be uploaded to your ERAS application and assigned to our program no later than February 1st of the match year.
- We are participating in program signaling. While we preferentially review applications from those who have signaled our program, we will consider applicants who do not signal our program.
- Brown IM will be conducting all interviews, virtually. There will be an opportunity for an optional in-person visit after interviews. Details will be reviewed during the interview day.
- Invitations will be sent to applicants beginning in mid-October, and applicants will have at least 3 business days to accept.
- Brown IM uses Thalamus for interview invitations and scheduling.
- Applying to Multiple Tracks. We accommodate those applicants who apply to more than one residency track (General Internal Medicine, Categorical Internal Medicine) by offering a single interview day experience, which will suffice for consideration for both Categorical and GIM programs. Many applicants apply to both of these tracks. Applying to both tracks will enable applicants to list both program NRMP numbers on their rank list. Applying to both tracks is in no way looked upon unfavorably by program leadership – it is indeed a common practice among applicants.
- Visas: Our program sponsors J1 visas and can accommodate Optional Practical Training (OPT) for students on an F-1 status. Our program does not sponsor H1 visas.
- The Brown University Medicine Residency participates exclusively in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for PGY-1 positions.

Please note the following information for International Medical Graduate Applicants:
The ECFMG serves as the Dean’s Office for all IMGs, including USIMGs. Please refer to the ECFMG homepage. Please note that we do NOT require certification by the ECFMG at the time of application.
We require:
- U.S. clinical experience with references – ideally these are hands-on clinical experiences.
- Medical School graduation date less than 3 years prior to submission of application.
