{"id":124,"date":"2016-08-10T20:39:12","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T20:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brownim.org\/2\/?page_id=124"},"modified":"2025-11-11T13:56:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T18:56:21","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/brownim.org\/2\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Medicine at Brown University employs world-renowned physician scientists across multiple subspecialties including cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, HIV\/STIs, pulmonary\/critical care, public health, general internal medicine and many other disciplines. \u00a0This provides a unique opportunity for medical residents to be mentored by faculty, and participate in, clinical and\/or basic research. <a href=\"https:\/\/brownim.org\/research.pdf\">Click here for an overview of research opportunities in the Department of Medicine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All internal medicine residents at Brown participate in scholarly work or research projects during their residency. Scholarly work may include quality improvement projects or other work related to an academic pursuit. Under direct supervision of the faculty, residents have access to significant resources including biostatisticians, library services, journal resources, seminars, conferences, and research laboratories across the Lifespan and Brown University campuse.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Matthew Murphy, MD, MPH, Residency Research Director, oversees the operation of the program. Dr. Murphy is an NIH-funded physician scientist who is a past graduate of our Brown internal medicine residency program. Dr. Murphy works with residents to ensure adequate support and guidance throughout the 3-part research process: Training, Execution, and Dissemination.<\/p>\n<h4>Training<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Throughout the PGY-1 Year, interns will begin their training in research and prepare to start their own research project.<\/li>\n<li>Interns receive an introduction to the Residency Research Program upon arrival to Brown during orientation.<\/li>\n<li>All interns receive human subjects training to participate in clinical research.<\/li>\n<li>Each February, Interns attend the Annual PGY-1 Research Retreat, where they learn about developing a research question, mentoring options, statistical methods and support and presentation\/dissemination techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty research mentors are available based upon subspecialty interests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Execution<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Residents may take elective months in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 year dedicated to research projects.<\/li>\n<li>Departmental resources exist to support research including biostatistics, IRB submissions, and other administrative and methodological issues.<\/li>\n<li>Throughout the Academic Year, each Subspecialty Division within the Department of Medicine produces a noon conference research overview of the work being performed in that discipline. Part of the conference is conducted by a resident currently engaged in research with faculty mentors in the specific area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Dissemination<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Senior Resident Research Day is held each May as a forum for senior residents to present their work. A subset of residents are selected for Podium presentations during the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds. Prizes and recognition are awarded for these efforts.<\/li>\n<li>Residents may elect to submit abstracts to the Annual ACP Associates Competition either at the State or National Levels or both. Residents may also submit to other national or local conferences.<\/li>\n<li>Residents are encouraged to write up their research for peer review publication in a major academic journal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Structured Research Training Opportunities<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Brown Residents Interested in Advancing Research (BRIAR) is a group of residents who are interested in pursuing research as part of their clinical training and career. The organization is informal and centers around social events as well as professional development opportunities. Residents who have been active in this group have also contributed to the strengthening of the research training experience at Brown by developing resources that empower residents to become leaders in their areas of research interest.<\/li>\n<li>The Resident Research Track is a formal two-year longitudinal program beginning in PGY-2 year with the goal of supporting residents in the development of a research question, implementing a plan to answer their proposed question utilizing resources at Brown and then disseminating their results through peer reviewed publications and presentations. The Track consists of monthly workshops including didactic sessions and discussions with leaders in research at Brown. Residents are encouraged to present their work at local and national meetings and to submit all projects for publication. Dr. Murphy is an NIH-funded physician scientist who is a past graduate of our Brown internal medicine residency program. Dr. Murphy works with residents to ensure adequate support and guidance throughout the 3-part research process: Training, Execution, and Dissemination. Training Throughout the PGY-1 Year, interns will begin their training in research and prepare to start their own research project. Interns receive an introduction to the Residency Research Program upon arrival to Brown during orientation. All interns receive human subjects training to participate in clinical research. Each February, Interns attend the Annual PGY-1 Research Retreat, where they learn about developing a research question, mentoring options, statistical methods and support and presentation\/dissemination techniques. Faculty research mentors are available based upon subspecialty interests. &nbsp; Execution Residents may take elective months in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 year dedicated to research projects. Departmental resources exist to support research including biostatistics, IRB submissions, and other administrative and methodological issues. Throughout the Academic Year, each Subspecialty Division within the Department of Medicine produces a noon conference research overview of the work being performed in that discipline. Part of the conference is conducted by a resident currently engaged in research with faculty mentors in the specific area. &nbsp; Dissemination Senior Resident Research Day is held each May as a forum for senior residents to present their work. A subset of residents are selected for Podium presentations during the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds. Prizes and recognition are awarded for these efforts. Residents may elect to submit abstracts to the Annual ACP Associates Competition either at the State or National Levels or both. Residents may also submit to other national or local conferences. Residents are encouraged to write up their research for peer review publication in a major academic journal. &nbsp; Structured Research Training Opportunities Brown Residents Interested in Advancing Research (BRIAR) is a group of residents who are interested in pursuing research as part of their clinical training and career. The organization is informal and centers around social events as well as professional development opportunities. Residents who have been active in this group have also contributed to the strengthening of the research training experience at Brown by developing resources that empower residents to become leaders in their areas of research interest. The Resident Research Track is a formal two-year longitudinal program beginning in PGY-2 year with the goal of supporting residents in the development of a research question, implementing a plan to answer their proposed question utilizing resources at Brown and then disseminating their results through peer reviewed publications and presentations. The Track consists of monthly workshops including didactic sessions and discussions with leaders in research at Brown. Residents are encouraged to present their work at local and national meetings and to submit all projects for publication.
